America is obsessed with France in its popular culture. Think about how many television shows, films, and music videos reference or feature France (and Paris specifically). Our popular culture is teeming with representations of the place, but how do those representations match up to the real thing? How do those texts reflect America's own values vs those of the French? In this I-credit honors course designed to introduce students to rhetorical criticism of mass media, you will have the opportunity to find out the answer to that question. Students will examine multiple popular culture texts, produced in the US and in France, to better understand how popular culture both creates and reflects values of a particular place. The course involves students exploring Paris and popular culture in the classroom and in situ. Students will learn through a range of modalities and genres, including an experiential Parisian travel component.
