This class is designed to compare various components of the criminal justice system—law enforcement, courts, corrections and community programs-- of the United States to that of the United Kingdom (special focus on Scotland). We will also be looking at concepts of sustainability within the realm of criminal justice activities and efforts. A major course objective is to learn about criminal justice systems - comparing the UK to the US. Students will have the opportunity to firsthand evaluate practices in the United States to that of Scotland through a travel abroad trip and be able to evaluate and contrast concepts such as policing practices, security, law, and various other components of the criminal justice system. CRIMJ 499 provides an opportunity to learn about higher education from the host country delegates/University representatives as well as:

During the embedded travel component, housing will consist of hotel/hostel overnight accommodations.
The process for enrolling in an embedded course varies according to the instructor and/or department. The program leader has indicated that in order to enroll in the course and travel component, students must submit an application of interest that provides basic background information (class rank, GPA, residency, major). Students will also interview with the program leader to discuss details and expectations.
