Overview

Eligibility

18 years of age or above at the start of the program
Enrollment in a four year degree program at any Penn State campus
In good academic and disciplinary standing at Penn State
3.0 cumulative GPA or better at the time of application review
Fellows need to have at least one more semester before graduation during the time of the summer internship to be eligible for the fellowship
FAFSA on file demonstrating significant financial need

Program Description

The Perreault Fellows Program supports international internship opportunities for talented undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds that are interested in pursuing careers related to health and the betterment of human condition broadly speaking. The program will enable students from Penn State selected colleges to immerse in interdisciplinary and experiential learning abroad. Also, fellows will engage in personal and professional development workshops, retreats, and mentoring sessions. Lastly, fellows will engage in community service throughout the program. This global leadership development program is built on the principles of inclusion, ethics, global awareness, and service.

The program is developed owing to Paul and Beverly Perreault’s generous gift to Penn State Global.

Program Components:

Pre-departure workshops: Ethical leadership, Global leadership and intercultural awareness, International Internships and Career Development
Summer Internship related to health and/or betterment of human condition in general: 8 weeks minimum
Post-internship reflection sessions and presentations
Community service engagement

Perreault Fellows will get financial support ( up to 8,250.00 USD) for their international internship experience. These fellowship funds will be used to cover international travel, accommodation, and living expenses. This program does not cover tuition for internship credits.

Program description: Fellowship events and internship

Internship Placements

Internship placements may be available in different sectors, from administration, financing, humanitarian work, outreach, and research aspects of health. Fellows will pursue an internship in health industry organizations or companies, hospitals, not-for-profit organizations, health campaigns, research institutes, or public policy and government institutions abroad, and other kinds of organizations that have health and human well-being in their focus.

Course Listings

Even though this fellowship experience does not offer academic credit, you will take part in mandatory fellowship workshops: Rock Ethics Institute workshop on ethical leadership and healthcare ethics, and International Internships and Career Development. If you want to transfer the internship experience into academic credit, you will need to work with your academic adviser or international careers coordinator at your college, to explore this option.

Academic Policies

If a fellow wants the internship component to be a credit-based, they need to talk with their academic adviser in their department or college. Depending on the College/Department policy, students may earn internship credit for this experience. Any Perreault Fellow who chooses to pursue academic credit will be responsible for covering tuition charges associated with that credit.

Depending on the fellow’s placement, you will live in independent housing or student dorms. Penn State Education Abroad will make an effort to assist fellows with leads on accommodation.

Costs and Funding

Program Costs

The fellowship funds (max. 8,250.00 USD) can be used for the following expenses:
• International travel,
• Accommodation,
• Stipend for living expenses while abroad.

Due to the variety of locations and partner institutions, costs will vary depending on the desired internship placement. The Education Abroad International Internship adviser will work closely with fellows to ensure the most accurate funding estimates to cover the costs of the internship abroad. If you have any questions, please contact the Perreault Fellows Program adviser.

Withdrawal & Refund Policy

The Perreault Fellows Program is a highly selective program. It is an opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills, to experience working and living in a different culture, and to intern within a global organization. This will provide fellows with a work experience that will set them apart from their peers in their chosen field. With this in mind, Perreault Fellows must consider this program seriously. All Fellows need to complete all parts of the program, with a proactive mindset, and strong work ethics.

In cases where students do not participate in all required parts of the program or do not fulfill their obligations according to the internship supervisor’s guidelines/syllabus, or if a student violates the Penn State Code of Conduct, this participant shall be withdrawn from the program, and will not graduate as a Perreault Fellow.

Perreault Fellows are encouraged to remember that any withdrawal from the program may incur financial consequences based upon the type of internship selected and the date of withdrawal. The Perreault Fellows Program Advisory Committee will consider withdrawal from the program on the case by case basis.
