Eligibility
- 18 years of age or above
- In good academic and disciplinary standing at Penn State
- 3.0 cumulative GPA or better at the time of application review
- Sophomore standing or above at the start of the program
Program Description
On this program, students will enroll in the Leeds International Summer School, which consists of 2 two-week sessions in which students take one course per session. Students must participate in all four weeks of the program to receive Penn State credit.
Through experiential learning and field trips, students will spend lots of time outside of the classroom enjoying hands-on learning that will give insights into British culture, history, and society. Each module typically includes at least one field trip to supplement the standard classroom learning. Previous destinations have included Castle Howard in York, the BBC at MediaCity UK, the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth, and the cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

Leeds is a prosperous commercial, industrial, and manufacturing city in the north of England. It is also the cultural and sporting center for much of the region. In the City Centre, modern offices have developed alongside fine old buildings like the Town Hall and the Corn Exchange. Impressive new shopping precincts complement traditional Victorian arcades and have created a fine regional shopping center. Leeds is a "green" city, proud of its parks and open spaces, including Woodhouse Moor, close to the university, and Roundhay Park and the Temple Newsam estate near the City Centre. One of the first great city universities established in England, the University of Leeds is one of the largest universities in Great Britain today. It has become a renowned center of learning and research, and its library is one of the major academic libraries in England with more than 2.5 million volumes.
Education Abroad in Countries with a Penn State Restricted Travel Designation
In order to comply with Penn State’s International Travel Policy, students interested in studying abroad in countries that Penn State has designated as “restricted” for travel, a petition for a waiver must be submitted. Once a petition is complete, and if the student is approved for study on the program in question, the student may be asked to meet with the Director of Education Abroad and the petition will be reviewed by the Penn State International Restricted Travel Committee (IRTC). The necessary petition will be included in the online application process for this program.
