Eligibility
- 18 years of age or above
- Good academic and disciplinary standing at Penn State
- 2.75 cumulative GPA or better at the time of application
- Sophomore standing or above at the start of the program
- No previous Spanish language study required
Program Description
Open to students of all language levels, the Latin American Societies & Cultures Program allows you to improve your Spanish language skills while taking courses in Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences, all of which feature an academic emphasis on Latin America.
If you have beginning- or intermediate-level language skills, you can choose from a wide variety of English-taught IES Abroad courses in areas such as Literature, History, Anthropology, International Business and Political Science. If you have advanced-level Spanish language skills, you have the option to choose from Spanish-taught IES Abroad courses and courses through the prestigious Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina. You can also take English-taught IES Abroad courses.

Buenos Aires is a top tourist destination, and is known for its preserved Eclectic European architecture and rich cultural life, including the art of tango. Buenos Aires is a multicultural city, being home to multiple ethnic and religious groups. Several languages are spoken in the city in addition to Spanish, contributing to its culture and the dialect spoken in the city and in some other parts of the country.
Education Abroad in Countries with a Penn State Restricted Travel Designation
In order to comply with Penn State’s International Travel Policy, students interested in studying abroad in countries that Penn State has designated as “restricted” for travel, a petition for a waiver must be submitted. Once a petition is complete, and if the student is approved for study on the program in question, the student may be asked to meet with the Director of Education Abroad and the petition will be reviewed by the Penn State International Restricted Travel Committee (IRTC). The necessary petition will be included in the online application process for this program.
