This course serves as an introduction to many of the grand-development and energy challenges humanity is facing in the 21st century. The course will establish connections between each challenge taking national and global perspectives, specifically focusing on regions within Latin America. Topics related to climate change, such as the carbon cycle, natural global warming, and artificial global warming with be presented. Students will learn the basics of energy systems, the universal patterns in energy transition and decarbonization efforts, developments in renewable technologies, and the newest research and innovations in these areas. Discussions will focus on approaches to reducing dependence on oil and gas resources, energy security, reduction of the health and environmental impacts of energy systems, energy efficiency efforts, and energy equity gaps experienced by underrepresented groups. These discussions will help us to identify the critical challenges that need to be overcome for a sustainable energy future. Therefore, from the list of United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals, the course will address SDG-7 Energy.

During the embedded travel component, housing will consist of homestay accommodations.
The process for enrolling in an embedded course varies according to the instructor and/or department. The program leader has indicated that in order to enroll in the course and travel component, students must complete an application via the Global Engineering Engagement website by August 27, 2023.
